When I was a child growing up in the 1960s and early 70s, I was fortunate that we lived on a farm in the country. One of the favorite things I had, went hunting for snakes on a beautiful warm sunny day. Life on the farm, as was 'snake heaven'. We had copperheads, milk snakes, snakes, black snakes, and garter snakes. We heard of rattlesnakes live in the mountains or near places, but I never saw one while growing up.
I would find an old burlap bag or feed sack into the barn, and head on the road for a short distance. Along the sidehill near our farm were numerous rocks. I would tend to locate a nice big flat rock that has not been pushed into the ground, or one that was held on the ground by other rocks beneath him. Carefully, I would take the skirt and tried not to let it reach my fingers under it, you never knew what you hiding underneath, ready to attack. One of the easiest ways to get bitten by a snake is to pick up a rock and let your fingers reaching underneath the snake can see the fingers, but you can not see the snake, and in one quick stroke you might direction the hospital.
Once I grasped the rock I sure would turn slowly and look under it if it is a snake, it would do one of two things. Either it would quickly try to escape and slither away and lost in the nearby rocks and weeds, or it would coil and try to defend themselves. Once I identified the snake as a non-toxic way, I would spring into action, you see, I thought of myself. Than master snake handler at the time The truth is, I was and still am a crazy person, I mean, there right mind, loved playing with snakes and toads, and I still have today as a middle aged man. I'm going to get out of my way not to harm, a snake or a toad when I mow lawns for a while to see or driving a vehicle.
Anyway, let us return to the capture of snakes. When I lifted the skirt if I identified the snake as poisonous as a copperhead, I would just slowly lower the stone back down on the snake and let it be. When I saw that it was a non-toxic variety, I would try to step on it, not enough to hurt them, but just enough to prevent them from escaping. Then I would slowly maneuver my sneaker or foot until the snakes head was visible. Then I would reach down and carefully grasp the back of the head or neck area, holding the snake is, it could not hit me and was powerless. It would often wrap the body around my wrist or arm if it was a big snake, but it was still powerless and the snakes where I lived were not very strong when it came to narrowing. Once I'd taken the snake I have it in my pocket, which I had with me, caught, then I would hunt for a few more, you see a snake is good, two or three to play, great!
Once I had a nice bunch of snakes I go back home, and shake it all up in a big box that I had. There I would sit and admire my precious collection. I had my father or brother to come and see them, I often would they. To my friends who lived in the area to show When I was a little boy, my best friend was a neighbor boy named "Johnny Brennan, he loved snakes as much as I, at the time anyway, and sometimes we would snake hunts together. My dad seemed to see things he would sometimes ask to see one, and he would sit and hold it, or look in the box of snakes, laugh, shake your head and walk away. Mom on the other hand, hated and feared things. was you always afraid bit and killed by a snake, and they always made me keep them outside of the house.
So as you can probably tell, I loved snakes, they were one of the joys of growing up as a young boy. Now I will tell you some of the great benefits that we get people from all around with snakes. Throughout North America, you know that of all the types of snakes that live here, only 4 are poisonous and can cause death to humans, these are the Cottonmouth 'Water Moccasin, "Coral Snake, Copperhead and rattlesnakes. The four types of poisonous snakes that live in North America only bite if approached, stepped on, attacked or harassed strong. The thing to learn is to 'leave them alone and they will usually leave alone. "
Do you like mice or rats? How do you feel about the fact that mice and rats come into your house or apartment in the cold winter months? I bet you hate it and you hate having them visit you in your home and apartment. Each time a snake is killed, that leaves hundreds of mice and other rodents that can invade your home and apartment. The only reason a snake would find in your area is because it to eat a good supply of rodents in the vicinity for them. Snakes do not just eat and control the mouse and rat population, they also eat worms, insects and lizards, beetles and spiders, and yes occasionally toad.
Now that you know about the benefits of snakes, maybe you will be more highly of them the next time you see one. How would you feel if you were a snake or a toad to feel, and every time someone saw you slipped through, they tried to chop off his head with a hoe, or by hopping when they saw you, they said "do not touch that odious toad, it will give you warts ". I think the creatures need the love and respect they deserve. Think of the joy of the snakes was a boy when he grew up, and think of all the evil mice and rodents to keep them under control.
